The market for specialty coffees in Europe has grown over the years. Within the specialty market you compete on quality and long-term relationships rather than on price. Direct trade relations open up interesting opportunities for reaching roasters with top-quality and value-added coffees. It has become essential for producers in the specialty segment to tell the story behind their coffee, including its origin and other environmental and social aspects. Nevertheless, the specialty coffee sector is still much smaller than the mainstream coffee sector, which is characterised by low-grade coffee with minimal certification.
