Climate-resilient coffee Indonesia
CBI is launching a two-year project in North Sumatra and Aceh to contribute towards making Indonesia’s Arabica coffee sector more climate resilient. These regions are major producers of Arabica coffee, but face increasing climate-related risks. The project will bring together local and international stakeholders to create a vision for the sector. We will also pilot climate-smart solutions in areas such as agroforestry and digital traceability.
The aim is to improve coordination in the sector, test scalable practices and strengthen SME's export readiness. We will connect local strategies to European market expectations to build a better future for the coffee sector. This improves livelihoods, cares for the environment, and opens trade opportunities with the EU. National and international experts will implement the project. To do so, they will work with Indonesian partners and European buyers.
Project goals
The project's goals are to:
- Assist the coffee sector in North Sumatra and Aceh in adopting a shared vision on climate resilient coffee production;
- Improve collaboration between stakeholders to develop strategies and pilots together;
- Identify export-ready SMEs committed to climate-resilient practices, and building their capacity;
- Test and document innovative practices (such as agroforestry, climate-resilient varieties and digital tools) for potential scaling.
Project participants
We will partner with 10–15 SMEs and cooperatives in North Sumatra and Aceh.
Activities
As part of the project, we will:
- Organise a workshop with multiple stakeholders to develop a roadmap for the sector;
- Pilot agroforestry and climate-resilient coffee varieties;
- Coach SMEs on EU market compliance and export readiness;
- Engage with European buyers to match demand with sustainable sourcing initiatives.
Expected results
The project will create a shared plan for the sector, carry out pilots and help SMEs connect with EU buyers. It will also give us insights for future phases. Better collaboration will make the sector more resilient and products more traceable and competitive.
