EU legislation: Food supplements (vitamins and minerals)

If you want to export food supplements to the EU, you have to make sure that your products meet all legal requirements.

Food supplements are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, with the purpose to supplement a normal diet. They are marketed in dose forms (e.g. capsules, tablets, sachets, drop dispensing bottles or similar forms designed to be taken in small and measured quantities).

In order to ensure that these products are safe and appropriately labelled so that consumers can make informed choices, the EU has established harmonised specific rules on vitamins and minerals in food supplements.

This document provides information on the EU requirements regarding the vitamins and minerals that may be used, the requirements for the labelling of food supplements and the relation with other EU legislation.
