Environment: Options for implementing organic fish farming

There is a demand for organic products in the EU. Organic agricultural production methods have been developed for the last 25 years and have recently been extended to products of animal origin. Organic fish standards can be applied for aquaculture and wild fish production for 'closed' areas (e.g. mussels).

As organic standards for fish farming have only recently been developed in a few countries and are still being developed at EU-level, there are no exact figures about the market share of organically farmed fish. Although organic production and consumption is increasing fast, this share is (still) very small. The downloadable document gives options for implementing organic fish farming.
